UN:Me: A Cerebral Horror That Blends Survival Horror and Social Deduction Mechanics
The latest Day of the Devs online presentation revealed several fascinating upcoming titles, but one in particular has seized attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure seems to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.
"It's a unique experience where a young woman harboring multiple personalities inside her must escape from a maze of the psyche," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Shattered Mind
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of teenage years. Within her exist four separate souls, each with their own fears and motivations. These entities can take over spontaneously, unleashing their deep-seated phobias upon her suddenly.
Judging by showcased footage, much of the narrative unfolds within a creepy medical facility, while other scenes depict the protagonist exploring a desolate chapel.
An Environment of Personal Dread
"What makes you fearful of? What causes you uneasy?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. People in power. Things that appear minor to other people can trigger something primal inside us. This game delves into that concept — anxieties that are specific to every individual."
The core gameplay loop revolves around controlling the persona that surfaces at a particular time. However, these identities will switch against your will during gameplay. During exploration, each soul's anxieties become amplified and assault the girl one after another. When the soul shifts, so does the particular terror the player encounters.
Unsettling Visuals and a Fatal Decision
At first glance, UN:Me displays striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The setting is populated by nurses all sporting the identical visage, with unnervingly wide grins. Patients in the waiting room have enormous blooms where their heads are. Flowers are an ever-present theme, contrasting organic elegance with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls inhabiting the heroine is the "real" one. "All four souls asserts that the physical form belongs to them," notes a developer. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is authentic."
After a player have deduced a soul is fake, they must eliminate it. However, because every entity can lie or obfuscate the truth, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.
"Maybe you've already eliminated the true [soul] by your own actions," a voice suggests. "The final entity standing might be a fake. Either way, your choices are final."
UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced launch window, but it is available to follow on platforms.
