The Creators of Baldur's Gate 3 Details Its Implementation of Generative AI for New Project

The team behind hit titles like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin has recently unveiled its new project, creating a wave of anticipation within the gaming community. However, follow-up statements from the company's co-founder have added clarity to the discussion, touching on the team's philosophy toward AI tools.

AI as a Creative Assistant, Not a Substitute

In a recent message, Swen Vincke outlined that the team is employing generative AI for specific supporting purposes. These include fleshing out PowerPoint slides, producing initial visual ideas, and creating draft dialogue.

Crucially, Vincke emphasized that the shipping material in the game will be authored solely by human writers. "Larian is developing every line ourselves," he said.

Larian is actively expanding our pool of writers and are busily putting together narrative groups.

As concept art is being specifically mentioned — we right now have over twenty visual developers and have roles to fill for more artists.

Each initiative we do is additive and designed to letting our team spend additional energy on actual creation.

Any AI system implemented properly is a boost to a developer's routine, not a replacement for their skill.

Tempering Reactions with Clear Intent

The admission of AI usage originally sparked backlash among portions of the fanbase. In reply, Vincke issued further clarification on social media.

"At Larian, we employ AI tools to research ideas, similar to we use search engines and art books," he explained. "During the initial planning process we use it as a basic framework for layout which we then swap out with hand-crafted artwork."

He continued, "We've hired talent for their inherent skill, not for their willingness to replicate what a algorithm proposes."

Key Areas of AI Integration

Vincke had in the past outlined the studio's practical method to AI and ML, grouping its use into primary pillars:

  • Handling Monotonous Jobs: Areas like refining animations, audio processing, and technical processes like adapting animations for different models.
  • Fast-Tracked Experimentation: Using tools to quickly build simple mock-ups of scenarios to validate concepts ahead of complete production.
  • Long-Term Aspirations: Researching how machine learning could one day facilitate innovative gameplay, particularly in simulating dynamic reactions in a vast role-playing world.

He explicitly noted that key artistic domains — such as writing — are not areas where the company is reducing creative input. In fact, Larian is actively hiring in these precise fields.

"Our studio is neither launching a game with AI-generated content, and we are certainly not considering trimming down creatives to swap them out with artificial intelligence," Vincke summarized.
