The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Discloses He Has a Plan for How His Sci-Fi Series Will Conclude... For Now.

The creative mastermind did not foresee that the Apple TV+ show would emerge as a cultural phenomenon. “God bless the fans,” he states. “I was surprised by the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”

With the first season of the popular series coming to an end—and the next chapter officially in the works—the writers' room recently discussed the fan response and whether it will impact the narrative path of Pluribus.

About the Incredible Viewer Reception

It would be easy to get swayed by the widespread acclaim and audience predictions about Pluribus. He is doing his best to avoid both.

“It feels like an endless supply of hot fudge sundaes and being in a state of bliss,” he explains. “It's the greatest thing, but I hear about it from others, and that's on purpose. I have never looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever plan to. It's quite the opposite. It's a rabbit hole I know I would get lost in and then I'd be never leaving the house from the hardware store and I'd be stuck in my living room.”

Regardless of Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no escaping the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The most practical strategy is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it alter the course of the show.

“We make no attempt to adjust our writing,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not impacted by online forums.”

“Better to keep our heads down and working,” he chimes in.

A Pressing Query: Does the creator See the Conclusion of Pluribus?

Given that Gilligan and his team are not listening by fan response, does it imply they have already decided how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? The answer is yes… with some caveats.

“We've developed some potential directions about where the show might end up,” Gilligan reveals. “but we are always ready to abandon a good idea for a more brilliant plan. This approach has served us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we find a more perfect path and I imagine we will be doing that.”

On the other hand, if plans fall through, director and writer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to use as a backup.

“I constantly suggest that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and that's where they've been all along,” Smith jokes, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”

Then again, why not reference the classics?

“I want Carol to open her eyes with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan says with a smile.

Pluribus can be watched on Apple TV.
