Outrage Erupts as Former President Trump's Social Media Remarks on Director Rob Reiner Draws Sharp Rebuke
Figures from across the partisan aisle and the entertainment industry are uniting to condemn former President Donald Trump for his remarks following the tragic deaths of acclaimed filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
An Inflammatory Online Post
Following the discovery of the couple deceased at their Los Angeles residence, Trump took to his platform to describe the deceased director as "anguished and suffering". The post, he asserted Reiner's death was "because of the hostility he provoked others through his massive, relentless, and incurable affliction with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
His comments quickly shifted to praising his own achievements, juxtaposing Reiner's supposed "intense obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump called the "unprecedented era of America".
Law Enforcement Developments and Detention
Authorities have since confirmed the arrest of the Reiners' 32-year-old son, Nick, on suspicion of murder in relation to the case. It is reported his bond was set at a substantial sum.
A Torrent of Condemnation from Celebrities and Politicians
The response to Trump's post was immediate and scathing.
This is a disgusting and vile statement,” remarked actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a friend, similarly criticized the statements. She pointed to prior rhetoric from Trump about the killing of an activist, asking, "Have you no shame? Can you get any lower?"
California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, simply stated, "This is a sick man."
Mirroring this view, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "He is a despicable piece of garbage."
Senator Chris Murphy added, "Trump has just crossed a line. Now saying the Reiners caused their own murder because they didn’t support him. So sick."
Rebuke from His Own Party
A number of GOP elected officials also voiced dismay.
Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene stated that the event was "a family tragedy, not about politics or rivals". She also mentioned challenges with addiction and psychological well-being within families.
Fellow GOP representative, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's remarks "unacceptable and disrespectful" considering the nature of the deaths. He openly dared others in his party to defend the comments.
Reiner's History and Stance on Trump
Rob Reiner was consistently a vocal detractor of Donald Trump. During a previous conversation, he argued Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the office. He had also warned about the dangers of authoritarian rule should Trump return to power.
"We see authoritarianism making its move around the world," Reiner said. "Should the United States fall, there’s a risk that democracy collapse around the world."
Despite his pointed opposition, Reiner had in the past expressed "complete revulsion" and condemned political violence without reservation after the killing of another individual.
An Ironic Connection: The Art of the Deal
Providing a layer of historical connection, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the artist who shot the cover image for Donald Trump's iconic book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had previously recounted the anecdote of the photo shoot, mentioning Trump's demand for "a specific hair product" while being photographed on a skyscraper overlooking Central Park.
