Forecasters are saying a chilly commencement to the new year, with snowfall likely throughout a lot of the UK. Celebrants have been told to dress warmly as near-freezing temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.

Hogmanay Plans Continue Amid Forecasts

Edinburgh's famous Hogmanay festivities are planned to take place, a contrast to last year's postponement. This comes despite yellow warnings for snow across northern Scotland.

"A cold New Year's Eve evening for those partying, so additional clothing will be needed," noted the weather service.

Celebrations Under Clear but Cold Skies

Across the UK, the weather is likely to be perfect for fireworks shows, with dry conditions and clear skies. The mercury are forecast to be low, so warm wraps a necessity, according to forecasters.

Further north, skies will be cloudier, but this is unlikely to affect visibility for seeing fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.

Extensive Snow Warnings for Friday

As we enter Friday, advisories have been issued for Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

• Disruptions and cancellations are anticipated on public transport.

Temperatures Expected to Fall Even More

Going into the new year, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are expected to fall even more as wintry showers and strong winds are predicted to hit the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow could accumulate to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the highest roads and hills.

Medical Warnings Issued

In addition, amber cold health alerts have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to continue until noon on 5 January, with the mercury forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Officials explained this indicated the weather was likely to cause notable consequences across medical and care provision. This includes a likely increase in the number of deaths among those with health conditions or those in the older age groups.

The advice for all is clear: to celebrate the new year in security, wrapping up warm is absolutely key.
