American flight controllers are more and more seeking second jobs and reporting ill, as they remain on duty unpaid amid the federal closure, the transport chief has announced.

"These professionals are becoming strained," Sean Duffy told a news outlet on Sunday, as some flights were grounded on the California shoreline due to staffing shortages.

Following the government shut down on 1 October, flight controllers, who are considered essential workers, were told to keep doing their duties uncompensated.

But a number have been missing, leading terminals to halt or reduce their flight operations, which has added to setbacks caused by climate and additional factors.

Over 3,000 US flights were delayed on the weekend, and the secretary stated he anticipates the situation to deteriorate further.

"I observe the stress," he said in an interview on Sunday Morning Futures, adding that he had spoken to several controllers to hear their concerns firsthand.

"They are pursuing second jobs, they're out there looking, 'Can I work for Uber, am I able to find an alternative of earnings to make ends meet?'" he added.

The secretary added that on the previous day 22 alerts at airfields said travel would be delayed due to a shortage of workers - among the peak after the closure began.

The American federal closure reached its 26th day on Sunday, rendering it the second most extended shutdown in history.

Duffy has consistently cautioned that flight authorities would slow down the quantity of aircraft in the sky if there is a deficit of safety personnel.

In his conversation, he declined to respond directly when asked if it was secure to fly in the United States, and instead issued a direct appeal to the professionals.

"I need my staff concentrating on the flight paths, not on the monetary matters at home," the official said.

On Sunday, certain flights were stopped at LAX due to staffing shortages, leading to disruption at the fifth most active terminal in the nation and among the most crowded in the globe, as well as other flights extending upward to the city of Oakland, California.

The FAA alert went out at 08:45 in the morning on Sunday. Numerous trips were back on schedule before noon.

Flights at Newark Airport, however, were postponed an average of over an hour due to staffing shortages, and the FAA said Dallas Fort-Worth, the second most active airport in the US, could encounter problems from reduced staff later in the day.

The FAA advised travelers in the state to consult carriers about updated flight schedules.

The issue comes ahead of the third match of the championship, which is scheduled in LA on Monday night, and about one month before the Thanksgiving break, among the peak times to fly in the US.

Strain on US air travel contributed to ending a government shutdown in 2019. At the time, the shutdown had reached its fifth week and disrupted airline operations, including aviator instruction.

It prompted several flight controllers to remain absent on the identical date on 25 January 2019, temporarily stopping travel at LaGuardia Airport in New York.

On that date, Donald Trump, who at the time was in his initial presidency as president, agreed to sign a temporary funding measure, effectively ending the federal closure after 35 days.
