Back in 2006, I made a trip to the Australian capital for an interview at a medical college. My plan was I would book accommodation when I arrived, but upon reaching the city, a big convention was happening and every single youth hostels and budget accommodation were completely sold out.

As a visitor from Singapore, I thought the possibility of spend the night at the airport – only to discover that airport, not like the one back home, does not operate all night. With no idea how to proceed and growing worried, I hopped on a city-bound bus and started wandering in the direction of the casino, reasoning it was a place to spend those hours somewhere that was open 24/7. This was not ideal at my peak to succeed at a crucial interview the next morning, yet, as a broke student, luxury accommodation was impossible.

Our society requires more people who show such kindness.

It seems I seemed lost because a female student noticed me loitering in downtown and inquired if I was OK. I shared my situation and immediately she said I was welcome to sleep on the ground in her student dorm at ANU – which was perfect, as that’s where the important interview was the following day. Generously, she also provided some food: one of the stuffed baguettes she brought back her part-time job. This gave me warm shower facilities and a secure location and secure to spend the night.

Looking back, I can appreciate the enormous leap of faith she took as a woman allowing a guy she had only just encountered stay in her room. Back then I operated under my male privilege bubble and did not consider about things like that. Today, as a parent, I am astonished she took that chance – and remain incredibly thankful.

I never did go to the Australian National University, and I lost touch with that kind stranger again, but I’ve never forgotten her selfless deed of human compassion. My sincere desire is that life has repaid her act of kindness many times over. The world needs more individuals who show such kindness.
